TREMONT — The Tremont Consolidated School and the Pemetic Elementary School will not merge, residents of both towns agreed last week in a public forum.
The 50 or so people who attended the April 9 forum at the Tremont Community Center also agreed that the issue should be revisited from time to time, to see if there is a stronger call for consolidating the two schools. No timetable was set for further discussions.
The joint forum for residents of Tremont and Southwest Harbor was the third held to discuss possible consolidation of the schools. At the forum, two models for consolidation were discussed.
Also on the table was the option of doing nothing – leaving both schools as they are. This, apparently, was the preferred path.
The decrease in enrollment and rising costs at both schools was the impetus for the forums.
Mr. Liebow said he was heartened by the fact that educational interests took precedence over financial concerns during the forums.
