RSU 24 Board approves $100K gift to Peninsula School

GOULDSBORO — The Peninsula School Nov. 3 was given the go-ahead to accept an unexpected $100,000 gift from an unlikely donor.

Local musician Jeremy Strater included the elementary school in bequeathing $2 million to a variety of organizations.

Strater died Feb. 2 of lung cancer. The 70-year-old bluegrass and folk musician was a familiar site on the Schoodic Peninsula in his Hawaiian shirts, worn khakis and beat up tennis shoes.

Strater gifted $100,000 to the Peninsula School with the understanding that it would be used “for programs providing education in art, music (steel pan drums), science lab, teaching GIS mapping and environmental studies.”

Attorney William Ferm of Ellsworth said in a letter to the school that disbursement of the funds will be made by the end of the year.

“It’s just an incredible gift,” Peninsula School Principal Sally Leighton told the Regional School Unit 24 Board at its meeting Nov. 3.

Superintendent Michael Eastman said the funds would be put in an interest bearing account and agreed with Leighton that a committee will be formed to help “chart a course” for use of the funds.

Board member Randy Bragg of Mariaville asked if there would be ramifications from the gift on what the district is entitled to under the state’s education funding formula.

Eastman said the funds would not affect what the district would ordinarily be receiving from the state.
