Road to close for Bridge Work in Seal Harbor

MOUNT DESERT — Route 3 at Seal Harbor Beach will be closed for up to five weeks, beginning Monday, Sept. 19, as the bridge over Stanley Brook is replaced.

Traffic will be rerouted onto Jordan Pond and Stanley Brook roads.

Last week, construction crews installed a temporary dam a few yards upstream from the bridge so that a sewer line that is buried beside the road can be relocated. Water from the brook is now flowing to the beach through a hose that runs through a culvert under the road.

The parking lot across Route 3 from the beach has been closed so that the contractor can use it as a staging area.

The Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) is having the 58-year-old bridge replaced because an engineering assessment found that its substructure and stone abutments are in extremely poor condition and the bridge itself is in fair to poor shape.
