Road approved

BAR HARBOR — A one-mile long, dead-end gravel road proposed by landowner Shepard Harris in Town Hill was subject to a public hearing before the planning board June 4.

The road would extend off Arrowhead Road, which intersects with Indian Point Road not far from the Mount Desert town line. The West Side Access Road would serve several large tracts of land totaling 330 acres owned by Mr. Harris and his daughter Melissa. The planning board is considering allowing the road even while the land use ordinance prohibits dead-end roads over 2,000 feet in length. In exchange, Mr. Harris is offering to place deed restrictions on the land that will allow development on only 110 of the 330 total acres served by the road. No public comments were offered at the June 4 hearing. The matter was tabled until June 19.
