SULLIVAN — Democrat Mike Fisher, a retired medical and science book editor, has announced that he will challenge Rep. Richard Malaby (R-Hancock) for Malaby’s seat in the Legislature representing District 136.
House District 136 includes Gouldsboro, Hancock, Mariaville, Osborn, Sorrento, Steuben, Sullivan, Waltham and Winter Harbor.
In making his announcement March 2, Fisher outlined an ambitious agenda if elected: growing jobs and businesses; making taxes fair; boosting public servants’ responsiveness; addressing the substance abuse epidemic; supporting education and environmental stewardship of the coastline.
“These are the same challenges faced by Americans in every part of our country,” Fisher said. “But District 136 has a special advantage as we take on these challenges.
“We have strong communities. We have strong connections to each other. In times of need, we support each other. And, like all Mainers, we are hardworking problem solvers.”
Fisher edited books in science and medicine for 35 years. During that time, he participated in initiatives addressing education, the environment and public transportation.
He and his wife, Merry Post, have twin sons who are 29.
Fisher is a graduate of Harvard University and has a master’s degree in communication from the Temple University School of Communication.
