
ELLSWORTH — Relay for Life will feature two Zumba classes and dramatic haircuts Friday night.
Zumba instructors from the Down East Family YMCA and Mount Desert Island YMCA will lead a Zumbatomic children’s class from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School track at 20 Forest Ave. A Zumba dance party will follow at 8. Before the big event, YMCA instructors and employees will be going under the scissors to donate their hair to Locks of Love. Three local stylists will cut volunteers’ ponytails on the entertainment stage at 7:50 p.m.
This is the fourth year Zumba classes will be offered during the Hancock County Relay for Life fund-raiser. The classes have raised over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society.
The 2013 Hancock County Relay for Life fund-raiser May 31 and June 1 will include round-the-clock events including ceremonies for cancer survivors, caregivers, supporters and in memory of those who have passed away.
The kick-off relay will begin at 6 p.m. with walkers circling the track. The walking continues until 10 the next morning.
Up to 600 participants have attended the event in the past and raised as much as $100,000 for patient programs and cancer research, all of which is donated to the American Cancer Society.
