ELLSWORTH — The 2013 Hancock County Relay for Life fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society will take place May 31 and June 1.

There will be round-the-clock events including ceremonies for cancer survivors, caregivers, supporters and in memory of those who have passed away.

Dozens of teams and hundreds of participants will meet at 4 p.m. at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School track at 20 Forest Ave.

The first event will be a reception for survivors.

Organizer Crystal Derocher said the kick-off relay will begin at 6 p.m. with walkers circling the track.

“The walking starts at 6 p.m. and goes until 10 a.m. on June 1,” Derocher said.

There will be a Zumbatomic class for children from 7 to 7:30 p.m. and a regular Zumba class from 8 to 9. The class will feature six instructors and new routines. Prior to the class, Zumba instructors will cut their hair on stage at 7:55 p.m. for Locks of Love.

Luminaria bags will be lit around the track at 10 p.m. in memory of caregivers, survivors and those who have died from cancer.

Up to 600 participants have attended the event in the past and raised as much as $100,000 for patient programs and cancer research, all of which is donated to the American Cancer Society.
