Program On Vernal Pools Slated

ELLSWORTH — A program titled “Vernal Pools — Stepping Stones in a Sea of Forests” will be held on Thursday, April 16, at the Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church.

There will be a social at 7 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30.

The program will be presented by the Chewonki Foundation.

Vernal pools provide seasonal breeding grounds for insects and amphibians such as wood frogs and spotted salamanders.

These shallow depressions are inundated with water three to five months of the year and become important nurseries for many species.

The April 16 program will explain the food chain within vernal pools and the adaptations unique to the plants and animals that use these quiet corners of Maine forests.
