VERONA ISLAND — Putting a new roof on the town hall will cost more than double what was first expected.
At the annual Town Meeting in April, the 20 voters present approved setting aside $6,500 for the roof work.
That turned out to not be enough money when bids came back higher than expected, which necessitated a special town meeting.
That meeting was held Thursday, Aug. 30, where eight residents approved taking an additional $7,000 in surplus funds to cover the added cost.
At the April meeting, one audience member asked if the new roof would be a metal roof and selectmen said it would be asphalt shingles instead.
Selectman Russell Ames explained at that time that metal roofing was deemed impractical because officials were concerned that snow would slide off the roof and onto the walkways around the building.
The Aug. 30 meeting cleared the way for roof work to begin — it couldn’t start without voters approving the extra money — but town office staff said as of Aug. 31 that no specific start date is yet in place.
