Portion of I-395 to close in May

BANGOR — A portion of I-395 will be closed during a four-day weekend in May for a bridge replacement project.

The stretch of I-395 from Exit 1 at I-95 to Exit 2 at Route 202 will be closed so that the bridge crossing Webster Avenue in Bangor can be replaced, according to a statement from the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT).

The four-day project will begin either May 6, 13 or 20, depending on the weather.

The project will not take place on Memorial Day weekend, when the first influx of summer tourists head Downeast.

Work will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and end no later than 7 a.m. the following Tuesday.

The contractor is required to give public notice of when the project will start the Tuesday prior.

“Major bridge projects, especially ones that require complete roadway closures, always cause some degree of inconvenience for drivers,” said Wayne Frankhauser Jr., MaineDOT’s manager of the union and federal bridge program.

“That’s why we are aiming to complete this project in just 83 hours — less than four days total — and that includes removal of the old bridge. So we are asking travelers to give themselves some extra time, drive safely, and help make this weekend challenge pass smoothly and easily for everyone.”
