Mobilize Maine Initiative Hopes to Fuel Job Growth

AUGUSTA — Governor John Baldacci and officials from FairPoint Communications joined economic development experts Monday to unveil a new tool to assist with bringing new jobs to Maine.

With the launch of the Mobilize Maine Initiative, FairPoint will commission economic consulting firm VITAL Economy Inc. to create and maintain for five years computer modeling software. The program offers new ways for developers and communities to crunch the numbers involved in a new business coming to town or leaving.

“Instead of our communities being in a reactive mode economically, Mobilize Maine will enable our distinctive regions to be proactive and to prepare and execute their own comprehensive development activities,” said Baldacci.

The tool is intended for use by Maine’s six economic development districts.

Jeff Allen, an executive vice president for FairPoint, said this project is part of his company’s commitment to helping the areas within its footprint.
