ELLSWORTH — Veteran state lawmaker Louie Luchini defeated challenger Ian Schwartz in Tuesday’s Democratic primary in Senate District 7.
With 26 of the district’s 27 municipalities reporting, voters favored Luchini more than 2-to-1. Luchini received 3,377 votes to Schwartz’s 1,563.
Luchini has served four terms (the limit) in the Maine House representing District 132 (Ellsworth and Trenton). He has served as chairman of the Ethics Committee and the Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs.
Schwartz is a writer and teacher from Mount Desert.
Luchini will face State Rep. Richard Malaby of Hancock in the November election. Malaby ran uncontested on the Republican ballot Tuesday.
Malaby, who owns the Crocker House Inn and restaurant in Hancock, has spent years on the Health and Human Services Committee, where he’s focused extensively on mental health care.
The District 7 Senate seat has been held by Republican Brian Langley of Ellsworth, who is term limited.
