BAR HARBOR — Attorney Lynne Williams intends to run for the office of Hancock County probate judge as a Democrat.

The term of the current probate judge, William Blaisdell IV, is up in November. Blaisdell intends to seek another term, according to one his staff.

Williams said she would like to make the guardianship process more family-friendly.

Since 2002, Williams has operated her own law practice, Williams Law Office in Bar Harbor. Her work has mostly included advising clients involved with Maine’s medical marijuana industry on regulatory compliance.

But, she also has experience as a mediator.

“As an attorney, a big part of my practice has been working with family with disabled family members, including children and adults,” Williams said. “I’ve struggled through the paperwork with them numerous times to get guardianship for them or conservatorship when they turn 18. It’s not an easy process.”

“I think that I could assist helping make some changes that would make it more family-friendly,” Williams said. “If there’s a disagreement between parties it becomes very, very messy.”

Williams would like to see mediators used more to aid communication in probate proceedings.

“Sometimes it works and it diffuses a lot of things that folks have been holding inside of themselves,” Williams said. “And it sometimes allows for an agreement outside of court to be made enforceable inside the court. I’d like to see more of that.”

Williams has a law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law.

She has a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Southern California.

While at USC, Williams worked as a research assistant for the Social Science Research Institute on a Department of Justice grant. The research investigated various forms of alternative dispute resolutions worldwide and what relevance those might have for the United States.

The attorney also has a Master of Arts degree in experimental psychology from the City University of New York at Brooklyn College.

She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass.
