Playground lands $5k gift

BAR HARBOR — Up to $5,000 in new donations to the Park Street community playground project will be matched by an anonymous donor in memory of Rick Alley of Bar Harbor, who passed away last December.

In lieu of flowers, Alley’s family had donations in his memory be sent to the Park Street Playground Project where his grandson and future granddaughter will spend many hours playing, playground project leader Amy Schwartz said. The project has been receiving donations in Mr. Alley’s memory from all over the state in the past couple of weeks.

After hearing of the family’s wishes, the anonymous donor contacted the group with the matching offer.

“A gift of this magnitude would double our current bank balance and bring us closer to our goal of rebuilding the Park Street Playground for the children of Mount Desert Island,” Ms. Schwartz said.

The project is a joint venture under the direction of the Mount Desert Island YMCA and was established in the spring of 2011 to remodel the town playground.

“The current state of our local playground does not meet our community’s needs and we are working to change that. The revitalization effort will be updating the space with new equipment engaging to children from the ages of 2-12 years,” Ms. Schwartz said. “The cost of purchasing and having a prefabricated modular playground installed is staggering. However, by implementing the community-built approach we will be able to bring to Bar Harbor a more custom designed unique playground.”

Schwartz can be contacted at 664-3336, or by email at [email protected] The group is also on Facebook as the ParkStreetPlaygroundProject.
