Peregrines return

ACADIA NAT’L PARK — Peregrine falcons are defending a nesting site at the Precipice and exhibiting courtship behavior. To protect the nesting effort, the park this week closed the popular Precipice trail; the East Face trail has been closed since it was damaged by an earthquake in 2006.

Resource management specialist Bruce Connery and volunteers have not yet seen adult falcons or a pair exhibiting nesting behavior at Valley Cove, Jordan Cliffs and Beech Cliff – sites where peregrines have sometimes successfully nested in the park.

Although peregrines are no longer listed as federally endangered, they are listed as endangered in Maine.

The Precipice trail will remain closed until approximately five weeks after chicks first fly.
