VERONA ISLAND — The Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which carries Route 1 over the Penobscot River, will undergo an inspection and bridge survey beginning on Thursday, Dec. 5.
During this work, there will be intermittent road closures and lane shifts during the daytime and overnight hours.
While conducting the bridge survey, intermittent road closures of up to 45 minutes will occur from 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, until 4 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6.
During the inspection, there will be alternating two-way traffic between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Thursday, Dec. 5, to Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) advises motorists to allow extra time when planning on traveling over the bridge during these hours.
The inspection will include gaining access to the bottom of the concrete structure, the supporting cables and the supporting pylons.
The survey is being performed to ensure that the bridge is maintaining its desired design geometry, according to the MDOT.
