BAR HARBOR — A row of ash trees running along Park Street were removed Tuesday by Savage Tree Service workers.
Highway foreman Scott Wood said that the trees have been suffering from rot and weakness in their crowns and have largely reached the end of their lifespan for the location that they are in. The final decision to remove them was made after a limb fell this winter and smashed a picnic table in the adjacent Park Street Playground, he said.
Plans are to begin replanting the area by the fall. The remainder of the ash trees on the street, running alongside the YMCA, also will be removed at some point, Wood said.
