Office holders opt not to run

MOUNT DESERT — Four of the town’s five elected officials whose terms expire this spring will not be running for reelection.

Board of selectmen chairman Tom Richardson is the only one who plans to seek another term.

Those calling it quits are selectman Rick Mooers, elementary school committee members Heather Jones and Brian Reilly and Mike Musetti, chairman of the Mount Desert Island High School trustees.

Jones and Reilly are each finishing their second three-year term. As members of the town’s elementary school committee, they also serve on the MDI Regional School System board and the high school board. Their decision not to seek re-election has implications for the future leadership of those boards.

Jones is currently vice chairman of the school system board and was expected to succeed Judy Sproule of Trenton as chairman.

Reilly is vice chairman of the high school board and was in line to take over the chairmanship from Tom Burton of Bar Harbor. Chairmanship of the high school board rotates among the four MDI towns, and next year it will be Mount Desert’s turn. Chairmen typically serve for two years, and Burton is completing his second year.

The Mount Desert School Committee members whose terms do not expire this spring are Laura Hendricks, Caroline Pryor and chairman Charlie Wray.

There are no rules for leadership succession on the school system board, but Sproule was vice chairman before being elected chairman two years ago.

Richardson has served as chairman of the board of selectmen here since being appointed to fill a vacancy in 2009. He was elected to a full three-year term in 2010.

Mooers is completing his second term as a selectman.

Musetti is the only Mount Desert member of the high school trustees whose term expires this year. The trustees are responsible for the high school’s buildings and grounds.

Candidates for elective office in Mount Desert may now pick up nomination papers at the town clerk’s office. March 22 is the deadline for papers to be returned. This year’s election for local offices will be May 6.
