BLUE HILL — The Lawrence Family Fitness Center is slated to open the first week of October.
The 20,000-square-foot facility is located behind Tradewinds Marketplace at 15 South St.
“I think we’re in pretty good shape, six weeks out,” said Chuck Lawrence, who with his wife, Belinda, owners of Tradewinds Marketplace, decided to build the facility for the community. “We’re looking really good.”
The couple have been working to bring the project to fruition for over five years. A hunt for the right location took time. A rainy spring last year delayed parts of the construction.
“The whole peninsula has been amazing to us as a family,” said Lawrence. “It seemed like the right thing to do.” The marketplace celebrated its 20th anniversary in Blue Hill in 2019.
The center will feature a pool, aerobics room and locker rooms, among other amenities.
“The pool area, which is a big part of the project, is 90 percent done,” Lawrence said. “We’ve ordered lockers and ordered bathroom stalls. We’re probably 85 to 90 percent done on the fitness side of things.”
A company from Massachusetts is scheduled to begin finishing the pool starting next week once all the workers have been tested for COVID-19.
“My hope is by Labor Day to have the fitness side done and paved and sided to do walk-throughs with people,” Lawrence said.
The Down East Family YMCA will operate the facility.
