CRANBERRY ISLES — Newman and Gray Boatyard has added a boat and a new feature to its business. The new boat, dubbed Cadillac, will be available to carry passengers to and from the various harbors on Mount Desert Island and the outer islands. The water taxi service will be available for hire on June 1. The boat will be run as an on-call basis.

The boat was constructed out of necessity because the workers at the Newman and Gray boat yard have been commuting to work in a small outboard-powered vessel.

The boat is custom built specifically to the needs of the boatyard. Josh Gray and Russ Cummings headed the project. Cadillac is a built down semi-displacement hull that is designed for her sea keeping abilities.

The boat is designed for the transport of customers and cargo, year round.

“The boat is enclosed for winter use,” said Ed Gray, owner of Newman and Gray.

The boat is licensed for six passengers and will transport Newman and Gray employees and other Cranberry Island workmen year round.

The Gray family has three licensed captains who will be running the boat. Josh will be the primary captain. His brother Seth and sister Hannah also will be spending some time behind the wheel. All three captains also are licensed for towing.

Having his children aboard the family business is somewhat of a dream come true for Mr. Gray. “It works out great. I have enjoyed it quite a lot. It doesn’t get much better for a father.”
