Firefighters battle the blaze that destroyed Cap’n Nemo’s Dec. 4.

TREMONT — The owners of a restaurant destroyed in a Dec. 4 fire told the planning board Tuesday they plan to rebuild.

Bob and Judy Cousins of Cap’n Nemo’s asked to meet with the board to discuss how to proceed with rebuilding the restaurant, which also served as their home.

Rebuilding Cap’n Nemo’s is possible but the Cousins must tread carefully in order to meet zoning requirements. The building lost in the fire was a nonconforming structure on a nonconforming lot, according to town officials. As a result, any new structure must be constructed within the footprint of the original building. The Cousins also must show they have the required number of parking spaces for their restaurant and meet the septic system requirements for both the restaurant and their private living quarters.

Chairman Mike Ryan told the Cousins that the board could only give them general advice. The board must have a building application before them in order to take any action.
