SULLIVAN — About 30 firefighters from at least eight towns were able to knock out and largely extinguish a 3.7-acre forest fire reported early Saturday afternoon off the Whalesback Road in North Sullivan, according to Sullivan Fire/Rescue’s information officer Jeremy Ogden.

In a heavily wooded area, firefighters had to hike in to where the fire was concentrated near some of the large granite quarries where some people earlier had been swimming to cool off from the heat. Tankers were able to pump water from one of the quarries.

In the early afternoon, a Maine Forest Service helicopter helped at the North Sullivan fire, but was dispatched to assist at other woods fires in Ellsworth, the town of Penobscot and Washington County.
