Patten Pond camp owner Eric Roos spent last Wednesday night at his camp and woke up in the morning to find this bull moose swimming in circles in the middle of the lake.
SURRY — A moose drowned in Patten Pond Aug. 28 despite the efforts of a nearby camp owner to save it.
Lee Canter, moose project leader for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, said the moose had a “pretty substantial infection, which may have affected the animal’s brain.”
Patten Pond camp owner Erik Roos of Bar Harbor spotted the moose swimming in a circle in the water. He tried to guide the animal to shore using first his kayak, then his Boston Whaler, but the moose eventually drowned.
Roos dragged the moose to shore where Canter met him at a nearby boat ramp and they hoisted the moose out of the water and into the game warden truck.
