BUCKSPORT — Bucksport High School juniors and seniors watched an enactment showing the results of a mock two-car “crash” on the school grounds Tuesday.
Bucksport Police Chief Sean Geagan narrated the scene’s unfolding to students as a few handfuls of parents and school officials, including Principal Josh Tripp and Regional School Unit 25 (RSU 25) Superintendent Jim Boothby, looked on.
“The objective of a mock crash event is to educate teens, young adults, parents and community members about the tragedy of traffic crashes — and to reinforce the importance of using seat belts, paying attention behind the wheel and to show the consequences of driving after consuming alcohol, drugs, and/or distracted driving,” said Sgt. David Winchester.
Several agencies helped Bucksport Public Safety and RSU 25 with the event, including the Maine State Police and the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home.
After the “crash,” Bucksport Police Officer Matt Schmidt performed a field sobriety test on student Elden Brown, who had been “driving.”
Maine State Police Trooper Travis Chapman, who is a certified drug recognition expert, took over for Schmidt after the initial field testing.
Meanwhile, funeral home employees loaded the “deceased” student, Nate Bowden, into a body bag and onto a gurney for transport to the funeral home.
Bowden’s “funeral” was being held at the school after lunch.
