MMA Student Wins Community Service Award

CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy student Caroline Burns of Falmouth recently received the Phyllis Tenney Community Service and Leadership Award in recognition of excellence in community outreach and volunteer service throughout her college career.In addition to receiving a personal plaque and money award, Burns will have her name added to a plaque in the Harold Alfond Student Center.

Burns is the secretary and former treasurer of the academy’s activities and band committee. She has helped organize the Class of 2009’s annual Ring Dance, served as an orientation leader for incoming students in the fall, provided piano accompaniment for the college’s vocal group, The Maritones, and acted as a student representative at the Naval Academy Leadership Conference. She has been a Big Sister for local elementary students for three years.

Burns, a graduate of Falmouth High School, is a member of the MMA Class of 2009. She is majoring in marine biology.
