Milliken announces candidacy for HD 16

BLUE HILL — Nina Milliken of Blue Hill announced her candidacy Feb. 7 to represent House District 16 in the Maine House of Representatives, which includes the communities of Blue Hill, Brooksville, Castine, Sedgwick, Surry and Trenton.

Milliken, who will run as a Democrat, serves on the school board for the town of Blue Hill and is a teacher at The Blue Hill Harbor School. She was the community educator for Downeast Sexual Assault Services (now AMHC Sexual Assault Services), where she worked with schools and other community organizations in both Hancock and Washington counties and provided advocacy for victims and their families.

“I have been a longstanding supporter of organizations combating violence against women and girls,” Milliken said. “These issues are important to me, and even more so now considering the actions being taken across the country to reduce access to abortion. We need strong leaders in political positions to combat all types of violence against women in our state.”

Milliken is an avid hiker, an environmentalist and a volunteer trail steward for Blue Hill Heritage Trust.

“Our natural resources in Maine are abundant,” Milliken said. “We need to look to our future and ensure that those natural resources are equally abundant for our children and their children. Maine is the most beautiful place I have ever been. Let’s do the work to keep it that way.”

If elected, Milliken said she would champion issues such as access to affordable health care, fighting climate change, improving access to recovery services, combating sexual and domestic violence and increasing the availability of affordable and workforce housing.
