ELLSWORTH — The real estate listing for 92 Water St., the location of Mike’s Country Store, exclaims, “Bring your ideas!”
One idea could be opening a convenience store, as the property listing states the “current tenant” will be out by mid-October.
“Mike’s Country Store is not for sale,” owner and Realtor Jeff Clark told The American. “The property located at 92 Water Street is for sale.”
Instead, the popular downtown convenience store is moving to 59 Downeast Highway, the same location Mike’s Redemption Center moved to from 92 Water St. about three weeks ago.
“The rest of the business will move to the new location in the coming weeks,” Clark said. “We will continue to offer everything our customers currently love at Mike’s.”
Clark said offerings of grocery, grab-and-go, beverage and fishing, camping and hunting items will all expand in the new location.
“We are sad to leave our faithful walk-in customers on Water Street,” Clark added.
Mike’s Country Store has been in business on Water Street for 124 years, selling hot and cold food to go, grocery items, beverages and — even in 2021— “penny” candy.
Clark bought the property in 2014 from proprietor Jody Colson and tried to sell it five years later. At that time, the business of Mike’s Country Store was part of the sale and of the asking price of $260,900.
Now, the property is listed as only property, offering “over 500 square feet of retail space,” with a kitchen, refrigeration units, storage room and office and attached rear buildings, one of which formerly housed the redemption center.
Better Homes and Gardens/The Masiello Group, where Clark currently is a Realtor, lists the property for $214,900.
