Mark Hurvitt to fill in at Union 76

ELLSWORTH — A familiar face will lead School Union 76 for the last few months of the school year.
The Union 76 Board has hired former Union 93 Superintendent Mark Hurvitt as interim superintendent through June 30, said board Chairwoman Elizabeth True.

School Union 76 includes Brooklin, Sedgwick and Community School District 13 on Deer Isle.

“Mark is an experienced superintendent who most recently served Union 93 and was once a principal in the CSD,” True said. Hurvitt retired from Union 93 on June 30, 2021.

Union 76 had an interim superintendent this year, Bob England, who replaced Christian Elkington, who left to take a position elsewhere.

“Mark will begin on March 7th and work with Bob England for several days to assure a smooth transition for all current projects in the union, including school budgets … and construction projects,” said True. “While Bob had graciously offered to stay a full 90 days after indicating his intent to resign, he had hoped to leave earlier, and Mark has made that possible.”

“I am so grateful to Bob for the work he did in the union during his time here, especially given all the challenges with COVID,” said True. “I am equally grateful that we were able to find an experienced, local superintendent in Mark to help us finish the year strong and set the stage for the arrival of a new permanent superintendent in the summer.
Hurvitt said he was asked to consider taking the interim position and he thought it would be a good fit.

The educator was principal of Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School from 1997 to 2003.

After retiring from superintendency, the Maine Department of Education recruited Hurvitt to serve as the department’s legislative and constituent specialist. That position is completely remote, Hurvitt said, adding he would like to be working out and about again.

Union 76 has been searching for a superintendent and intends to start interviewing candidates soon, True said.

The union will pay Hurvitt $50,400, the chairwoman said.

In his spare time, Hurvitt serves on the George Stevens Academy board of trustees.
