Man killed in Stonington crash

ELLSWORTH — A Stonington man died in a two-vehicle crash on Burnt Cove Road in Stonington the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 9, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Michael C. Turner, 65, died at the scene, police said.

Both vehicles had been southbound, Turner’s 2018 Kia hatchback and a 2008 Honda CRV operated by Jennifer Moody, 52, of Castine, said Lt. Tim Cote.

Moody had stopped on the right side of the road to deliver mail, Cote said. Turner failed to see that Moody had stopped and the hatchback rear-ended the CRV. At that point, the hatchback pivoted sideways and rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels in the northbound lane, the lieutenant said.

Moody had back pain and was treated at the scene by EMS workers, police said.

“The cause and contributing factors of the accident remain under investigation,” said Cote.

Deputy Dylan Hall is the primary investigating officer. Cote and deputies Brian Archer and Zach Allen assisted.

The Stonington and Deer Isle fire departments helped at the scene along with Memorial Ambulance.

Detective Jacob Day will be reconstructing the collision with help from Maine State Police Trooper Joshua Lander.
