Man Dies in Jet Ski Incident

ORLAND – An Orland man died Sunday afternoon after falling off his jet ski on Toddy Pond.

Ross Staples, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel after attempts to perform CPR failed, according to Caroline Hailey of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Staples, who reportedly was not wearing a life jacket, fell off of his Kawasaki jet ski while going from the boat launch to a nearby beach. Staples was able to get back on the jet ski but, once again, fell off, this time about 50 feet from shore, Hailey said.

Witnesses jumped in and pulled Staples to shore but efforts to revive him failed. The Maine Warden Service is investigating the incident.
