ELLSWORTH — A city man was arrested Wednesday and charged with multiple domestic violence offenses involving knives.

Police were called to the scene at a residence off of High Street around 9:40 p.m. on Nov. 18 when a woman reported her “intoxicated husband was armed with knives, had cut himself and was refusing [to let] her leave the Ellsworth residence with their children.”

Ellsworth officers were initially busy with another case when the call came in, and Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies and Maine State Police troopers went to the scene.

The man, 28-year-old Michael Ames of Ellsworth, eventually came out of the home and taken into custody by Ellsworth police.

As a result of an investigation, Ames was charged with the following offenses: domestic violence assault (he allegedly grabbed the victim by the hair), obstructing the report of a crime (he allegedly broke her phone), criminal mischief and domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon (he allegedly had a knife in each hand).

Ames was taken to the Hancock County Jail following his arrest.
