In its 2015 marketing plan, the Maine Office of Tourism has catalogued three types of people it’s hoping will visit Maine in the coming years. The groupings should amuse any Mainer who enjoys people-watching in towns like Bar Harbor, Stonington and Castine.
1.) The Balanced Achievers

First are the “balanced achievers,” who enjoy both the cultural experiences you’d find in a city and the rugged charms of either nature or a small town. They tend to be big spenders and more ethnically diverse.
2.) The Genuine Originals

Next are the “genuine originals,” who prefer places off the beaten path, enjoy the outdoors and avoid “cookie-cutter vacations.” They’re “broad-minded and very curious about anything that is quirky, offbeat or novel.”
3.) The Social Sophisticates

Last are the “social sophisticates,” who are interested in luxury, services, social status and appearances. They “are not careful about money” and “believe you can tell a lot about a person by the way they dress.”
