Kiddo aims for May 1 opening

ELLSWORTH — An iconic downtown anchor storefront may soon spring to life, just in time for this year’s summer season.

Hans van der Does, who owns Kiddo along with his wife, Linda, says the children’s store should be ready to open its doors on May 1.

The couple, who also own Toko Ellsworth, closed on the sale of the historic Beals Jewelry Store building in March of last year. The store had closed in 2020 after 94 years in business.

The couple planned to open the store by June of 2021, and then by Christmas, but the amount of renovations needed continued to delay the store’s opening.

“The building needed a lot of work,” van der Does explained. “Plumbing, electrical, everything.”

There was also a lot of cosmetic work done, with the walls being painted and new flooring installed. But van der Does pointed out that the store retained several features from the original construction, including the hardwood paneling around the inside of the storefront window. Elements of the building’s exterior have also gone unchanged.

Kiddo will join a growing number of options for the city’s younger clientele along Main Street, with Sugar Mags, which opened in 2017, and the Union River Book and Toy Co., which will be under new ownership beginning in June.
