Middle school jazz bands from the Emerson School in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Elementary School took second and third place, respectively, in their division Saturday at the State Instrumental Middle School Jazz Festival at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport.
The Emerson band, directed by Joe Wainer, performed Clifford Brown’s “Blues Walk,” Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” and Charlie Parker’s Latin bebop tune, “My Little Suede Shoes.”
Tenor saxophonists Amy Keene and Aaron Krevans, violinist Isabel Bohrer, trumpeter Molly Moon and drummer Ian Sampson took home soloist certificates.
Mount Desert Elementary School band director Heather Graves said she was thrilled by her students’ third-place finish.
The Mount Desert band performed “Hog Squealin’ Rip Snortin’ Bellyachin’ Blues,” “Blue and Sentimental” and “Caribbean Dance.”
Trumpet player Tyler Wood was one of five musicians in the division to receive an outstanding musician award from the judges for his solo on “Hog Squealin’.”
Soloist certificates were awarded to drummer Andrew Dalton, alto saxophonists Madison Luck and Sarah Norwood, tenor saxophonist Max Mason and trumpeter Keating McFarland.
Jazz bands from the Tremont Consolidated School and Pemetic Elementary School also competed in Division 4.
