“Interview” takes third at States

The cast of Mount Desert Island High School’s production of “Interview: A fugue for Eight Actors,” was somewhat crestfallen and more than a little flummoxed by their third place finish at the State Drama Festival Competition last weekend.

MDI received the second highest point score (289 out of a possible 300) of the nine competing high schools in class B. But, due to the Maine Drama Council’s new scoring system they were ranked third after Yarmouth’s “Secret in the Wings” (299) and Hermon High School’s “The Complete History of America,” at 281. This same arcane scoring system blocked MDI from winning the regionals last year when, again, they received the highest points, but were ranked second.

Casey Rush says his cast did everything he asked of them, and then some.

“I am extremely proud of the cast, crew and staff of ‘Interview,’” he said. “The goal I set for them after the regional was to give an even better performance than they did at the regional, and they did precisely that.”

Which he acknowledges makes it that much harder to swallow the disappointing point score and ranking discrepancy.

In any case, the “Interview” cast once again received the judges’ commendation for Ensemble Acting and Axis Fuxsman-Krumpa, Griffin Graves and Ailish Fahey were singled out to receive “All Festival Cast” honors.

Area residents will have a chance to see one last performance of “Interview” at the Black Rose Showcase Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. Along with the encore performance, this variety show, which was postponed from last week, will feature student music and films, a costume and prop auction and art show. Proceeds will go to the Higgins-Demas theater renovations.
