Hospice Volunteers hosting upcoming online conference

ELLSWORTHHospice Volunteers of Hancock County is hosting this year’s Hospice Foundation of America Living with Grief conference, titled “Trauma and Loss,” on Tuesday, May 24, from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The conference will be held online via Zoom. The conference is free of charge, but pre-registration by May 20 is required.

The national panel (a televised presentation) will focus on the specific issues raised when losses are sudden and traumatic, including the result of accidents and disasters, suicides, overdoses, homicide and terrorism; military or service-related deaths; or the unpredictable trajectories of illnesses.

Complicating their grief, these types of losses can shatter individuals’ assumptions about life and the world. Part One will explore the factors that complicate grief. Part Two will use case studies to highlight ways that such losses can be treated. The program concludes with a discussion of vicarious traumatization and strategies for self-care.

A local panel will address these same subjects from their service-specific perspectives. The local panel will include the Rev. Dr. Bernard Richardson, director of spiritual care, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center; Kandyce Powell, executive director, Maine Hospice Council; and Pamela Gagnon da Silva, LCPC, staff clinician, NextStep Domestic Violence Project.
