Registration open for Beth C. Wright Center Ride for Life

ELLSWORTH — This year the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center will host the 14th Annual Ride For Life and the center is announcing a new, user-friendly registration system for riders.

This yearly fundraising event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8, with all bike rides beginning at the Surry Elementary School, which is located at 754 North Bend Road in Surry.

There will be a variety of cycling levels from beginner to advanced. A 100-mile, 50-mile, 20-mile and an eight-mile ride will be offered where riders can take in beautiful views along the Blue Hill Peninsula.

Riders can register, form teams or donate directly on the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center’s website at

Riders can ride individually or as part of a team, and there is a family option as well. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Both the 100- and 50-mile riders will take off at 8 a.m., with the 20- and eight-milers leaving at 10.

All riders will return to the Surry Elementary School for a barbecue lunch and entertainment. Every rider who registers by Aug. 27 will receive a free Maine lobster roll at the barbecue following the race and the top fundraiser of this year’s event will receive a gift-certificate from Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop valued at $100.

The Ride for Life has been the second biggest fundraiser for the center since the organization’s beginnings in 2004.

The event began when area resident Steve Shelton came into the old Beth Wright Center with a $300 check for donations he received after taking his bike on a long ride in remembrance of the victims of 9/11. That was the genesis of the Ride for Life, and since that day the Ride has grossed nearly $190,000 in revenue. That money has helped fund the free programs and services the center offers to people living with cancer and their caregivers and families in Hancock and Washington counties.

Anyone who can’t ride on Sept. 8 but would like to be involved can volunteer by calling 664-0339. Donations will also be accepted at
