MDI Hospital Offers Guidance On Talking to Kids About Sex

BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Women’s Health Center will present “The Talk: How to Talk to Kids at Any Age About Healthy Sexuality” on Tuesday, March 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.


The free event will take place at the College of the Atlantic’s McCormick Lecture Hall. Topics presented will include: Becoming fluent in the languages of sexuality; Defining healthy sexuality throughout the lifespan; Strategies and suggestions for effective communication with kids and teens about all aspects of sexuality.

The event will feature a presentation by human sexuality educator and consultant Al Vernacchio, a high school teacher at Friends Central School in Wynnewood, Penn. Mr. Vermacchio has more than 20 years experience teaching human sexuality at the high school and college level, and for civic organizations. He has also published book chapters and lesson plans on sexuality-related issues. Mr. Vernacchio earned his bachelor’s degree in theology from St. Joseph’s University in 1986 and his master’s degree in Human Sexuality Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS), The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) and Advanced Sexuality Educators and Trainers (ASET).
