BAR HARBOR — Private security guards are now on patrol at Mount Desert Island Hospital. Guards are on duty from 3 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 24 hours-per-day on Saturday and Sunday. Patrol began on July 1.
“The security of our patients, visitors and staff is of the utmost importance to us at MDI Hospital. We are pleased to implement this next level of safety as an enhancement to our existing security procedures,” said Arthur J. Blank, hospital president and CEO.
Security team members will be located primarily at the visitors’ entrance to ensure the safety of the hospital’s emergency department and registration area, said spokesperson Oka Hutchins. Security officers will also make rounds in the hospital parking lot and main building at night.
The security team is currently working to assess the specific needs of MDI Hospital, Ms. Hutchins said. As these needs are identified, they will be integrated into the Hospital’s existing procedures, including codes and drills.
