Government releases data comparing hospital costs



ELLSWORTH — The cost of getting sick can vary dramatically depending on where a patient seeks care, according to data released this week by the federal government.

The 2011 data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services shows the average rate charged to Medicare for common inpatient procedures at more than 3,000 hospitals throughout the United States.

In Maine, rates varied by as much as tens of thousands of dollars. Hospital bills for respiratory infections and inflammations with major complications averaged $62,029 at Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle compared to $20,496 at Mercy Hospital in Portland. The price for treatment of infectious and parasitic disease with an operating room procedure was $95,576 at Eastern Maine Medical Center compared to $60,650 at Mercy Hospital in Portland. Treatment of renal failure with major complications had an average rate of $14,130 at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth compared to $30,460 at Eastern Maine.
