Gala Channels Churchill Downs to Raise Money for Breast Cancer

ELLSWORTH — Gala committee members have been meeting for weeks and planning creative ways for the 17th Annual Union Trust Chefs Gala to support and raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The first major task was finding a location large enough for a dinner dance with all the featured food of the local chefs and chose the spot in the Maine Coast Mall formerly occupied by Marden’s.

The date of the gala has been moved to May 15 to allow for time for the committee to transform the space into Churchill Downs – complete with the Twin Spires and Millionaire’s Row. This fund-raiser for the Breast Clinic and Mammogram Scholarships is sponsored by Union Trust, a division of Camden National Bank, and is an event not to be missed, organizers say.

Chip Butterwick of Chipper’s Restaurant in Hancock will lead the chefs and will feature his specialty foods in the Kentucky Bourbon Restaurant. Rich Malaby of the Crocker House on Hancock Point will be presenting his famous raw bar in the shape of a horseshoe complete with paired wines for a delectable start to the evening.

And no Kentucky Derby gala would be complete without a hat parade. Pre-registrations are being accepted at 664-5337. Please call for details.

Would you like to win fuel oil for a year – up to 1,000 gallons? No Frills Oil of Hancock has donated that gift to the gala, with all proceeds going to mammogram scholarships at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Tickets for the fuel oil are $10 each or three for $25 with the winner being drawn at the gala on May 15.

If that is not enough excitement, the 17th annual Union Trust Gala will be hosted by WLBZ News Center 2 Team and will feature live music by the Tony Boffa Band. Dr. Peter Cummings of Hancock Dental proudly sponsors this live big band music.

Betting windows open at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, at the gala. Tickets are $85 each with tables of eight and 10 available online at www.mainehospital.org or by calling the public relations office at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital at 664-5337.

Seating is limited so call early to save your spot at Churchill Downs and help fight breast cancer. Early detection saves lives!
