Ellsworth Woman Organizes Walk For Huntington’s Disease Research

ELLSWORTH — Nancy Patterson invites the community to join the Team Hope: Walk, Fun-Run, Bike Ride for Huntington’s disease research.

The event takes place in Ellsworth Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. on the Downeast Sunrise Trail off the Washington Junction Road. Patterson, the Maine Affiliate chairman of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, is organizing the event. It is the only fund-raiser in Maine focused on Huntington’s disease.

In her lifetime she has had four generations of close family members with this deadly disease, which takes away a person’s ability to walk, talk, swallow, think and control emotions over a period of 10 to 25 years. Every offspring of a person with the disease has a 50/50 chance of inheriting it. Huntington’s disease strikes in the prime of life; there is no cure.

The good news is that thanks to fund-raisers like Team Hope, there is support for families, education, advocacy and promising research going on to cure and/or put a stop to Huntington’s disease.

Patterson’s message is, “Form a team, ask your family and friends to sponsor you, take this opportunity to be part of something that will make a difference to people who struggle for years on end with Huntington’s. Just bring pledges of $15 or more and get a T-shirt. When you wear the Team Hope shirt, you will be reminding HD families that people care about them. Walk, run or bike the distance of your choice on the beautiful Sunrise Trail on Sept. 18 with Team Hope.”
