BUCKSPORT — Like many senior citizens, Joyce Johnson values being able to live in her own home.
At 87 years old, however, living there is not as easy as it used to be.
Johnson recently took steps to make life easier for herself — she moved her washer and dryer from the basement to the first floor, added railings in her bathroom and raised the front steps.
Johnson, a member of the Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition’s Senior Resource Committee, decided to do those things after hearing people talk about them at the group’s meetings.
Now, Johnson and her fellow committee members want to get others in the community thinking the same way.
The Senior Resource Committee is launching a new program called Healthy Living. Its official goal is to “assist aging adults and their families in planning that will enhance their likelihood to live independently in the housing option of their choice.”
The program kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with an overview workshop at the Bucksport Senior Center (125 Outer Broadway). Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to pre-register by calling 469-6682.
Seven additional workshops, one a month, will follow the Oct. 2 event.
