Breast Center Tops in Tech

BAR HARBOR — As Down East Maine’s only Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the center at Mount Desert Island Hospital provides a secure, comfortable place for women of all ages to receive exams, gain information, and focus on breast health.

The American College of Radiology has designated just six breast imaging centers of excellence in the state, making the title even more special, officials said.

“Basically, to me, it shows a very strong commitment to our quality of imaging and taking care of our patients,” said director of imaging Jeff Murad. “There are only a handful of such designated centers in the state, so it’s definitely a little bit of a pride thing too.”

The MDIH Breast Center is located in a private wing of the hospital notable for its soft color palate and homey décor. A separate entrance provides for the utmost in privacy, while also allowing patients to avoid the feeling that they have entered the hospital.

The staff of the center, including head mammographer Roberta Wessel and head nurse Betty Mitchell, utilize a three-step approach to breast health, which includes clinical care, self care, and mammograms. “The three,” Ms. Wessel said, “are very important for early detection.”
