Haney named MDI High principal

BAR HARBOR — Matt Haney, an assistant principal at Mount Desert Island High School since 2005, has been named the new principal, effective July 1.

Superintendent Howard Colter recommended Mr. Haney for the job, and the high school board voted Thursday night to approve his hiring. He will succeed Matthew Janger, who announced his resignation in January and has since accepted the job of principal of a high school in Arlington, Mass.

Last month, the MDI High board endorsed Colter’s recommendation to look within the school system for the new principal before launching a broader search. Haney was the only internal applicant.

As assistant principal, Haney has been responsible for teacher supervision and evaluation, student discipline and attendance, administration of the school’s digital technology program and professional development planning. In January, his job title was changed to dean of curriculum, and he was given responsibility for planning and teacher support as the school transitions to a standards-based model of education.
