Hancock County Sheriff’s log week of August 18

ELLSWORTH — Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Dakota Dupuis is investigating an incident in which an Alaska man who was in Orland for work earlier this month may have been given fentanyl instead of cocaine, which he thought he was receiving.

“The male later overdosed and suspected that the drug he was given was actually fentanyl and as a result wanted to make a report about the incident,” Dupuis said.


The Hancock County Regional Communications Center took a call Sunday about a man digging up the lawn at the town park while metal detecting, said Deputy Jon Mahon.

“Made contact with the male and told him he could not be digging up the grass and he was all set with that and left,” Mahon said.


Jasmine Stevens, 33, of Surry was arrested on a warrant Aug. 11.

Aaron Higgins, 38, of Bar Harbor was arrested on a warrant charging contempt after a traffic stop on High Street Aug. 11.

Donald Murphy, 66, of Tremont was arrested on charges of burglary, criminal trespass and violating conditions of release Aug. 11.

Deputy Travis Frost arrested Jason Sherwood, 46, of Blue Hill on two warrants after an Aug. 12 traffic stop in Blue Hill.

Unattended deaths

Deputy Marcus Downes checked on an unattended death of a man, 78, in Surry Aug. 8.


A car traveling northbound on Caterpillar Hill Road in Sedgwick Aug. 9 struck the rear of a sport utility vehicle, which had stopped in front of the car and then drove away, said Deputy Kyle Kramer.

Nathaniel Sargent, 34, of Orland was driving a Chevrolet Cruze, which struck the SUV, Kramer said. Sargent did not see the SUV stopping in front of him.

“Prior to my arrival the SUV had already left the area and I was unable to locate it,” the deputy said. “Nathaniel’s vehicle was towed due to the extent of the damage it sustained.”

Motor vehicle complaint

Deputy Kamren Jennings stopped a motorist whose pickup truck was swerving into traffic on Route 200 in Franklin Aug. 13. “I made contact with the operator and spoke to them about the dangers of driving tired,” the deputy said.

Agency assist

Deputy Rob Morang assisted the Maine State Police at a domestic incident in Franklin Aug. 15.

Deputy Hunter Fernald helped the Maine Warden Service in finding and dispatching an injured deer in Orland Aug. 10.

Citizen assist

Mahon spoke with a Stonington resident who wanted to discuss options on what to do with “people coming onto her property and leaving things. I provided her with a couple of different options.”

Jennings called a tow truck for a vehicle that had gone off the road on Newbury Neck Road in Surry Aug. 14 and was stuck.

Domestic call

Deputy John Stanley went to a possible domestic incident in Otis Aug. 11. “After investigating, those involved were told to stay away from each other for the night,” Stanley said. “No assaults occurred.”


Deputy Zach Allen summoned Raymond Wood, 61, of Bucksport on a charge of criminal speed after he was allegedly traveling 90 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone in Orland Aug. 11.

Tracy Gardner, 49, of Newport was summoned on charges of operating without a license and violating conditions of her release Aug. 11


An Orland business reported a theft Aug. 11. Allen is investigating.

On Sunday, multiple deputies went to the Subway area in Ellsworth to help find a man who had allegedly stolen something and fled on foot, said Deputy Dakota Dupuis.


An Orland resident had fallen victim to a scam Aug. 2. Jennings is investigating.
