Hancock County residents attend Gridiron dinner

Hancock County was well-represented at the Gridiron Club and Foundation’s 131st annual spring dinner on Saturday night in Washington, D.C.

Ellsworth resident Richard Dudman, the oldest member of the Gridiron Club, attended the event with his grandson, Richard Howland of Islesford and Ellsworth City Councilor Gary Fortier. The Gridiron Club’s membership consists of newspaper reporters and other journalists, and the annual spring dinner is a chance for media personalities and members of the political establishment to poke fun at politics and more.

Fortier reported Dudman — who spent more than three-quarters of a century writing for newspapers — received a standing ovation from the audience of more than 600 people (including Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and other political dignitaries).

Fortier often delivers the New York Times to Dudman and his wife, Helen, and that led Dudman to invite his “paper boy” to attend the event with him.
