Great Harbor Shootout to Showcase 70 Teams

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The season between winter and spring is known as the unlocking and the thaw will continue as basketball action heats up on Mount Desert Island with the 16th Annual Great Harbor Shootout (GHSO) this weekend.

Once again the event has a record number of entrants with 70 teams slated to pound the boards at five venues across the island.

The tournament will feature two divisions of high school boys, one playing at the Mount Desert Elementary School and the other at the MDI YMCA in Bar Harbor.

There also will be two divisions of high school girls, one playing at Trenton Elementary School and the other at the Pemetic School in Southwest Harbor.

The junior high boys’ and girls’ divisions both will play their games on two courts at MDI High School.

Play will begin at 4 p.m. tomorrow for the junior high boys and an hour later for all other divisions.

Championship games, all at the Mount Desert Elementary School, will be played on Sunday afternoon and evening.

The junior high girls will kick things off at 3 p.m. Follwoing will be the junior high boys at 4:10 p.m., the high school girls at 5:20 p.m. and the high school boys at 6:30 p.m.
