Garden club to host talk July 20

ELLSWORTH — On Wednesday, July 20, at 7 p.m., the Ellsworth Garden Club will host nationally recognized speaker John Forti at the Moore Community Center, 125 State St., Ellsworth.

Forti’s presentation, titled “The Heirloom Gardener — Traditional Plants and Skills,” draws from his new book of traditional plants and skills for the modern world. Richly illustrated with period images and contemporary woodcuts, his slides share inspiration from a long history of heirloom preservation, herbalism and gardening as a craft.

Artisanal gardening lifestyles are helping us to rebuild vibrant local agricultural economies and celebrate sustainable cottage industries while contributing to our new, homegrown American arts and crafts movement and backyard environmentalism.

Forti is a garden historian and ethnobotanist who has directed gardens for the Plimoth Plantation Museum, the Strawbery Banke Museum, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and Bedrock Gardens.

This event is open to the public and free of charge. For more information, call 667-8878.
