Fund launched to aid Acadia

BAR HARBOR — A new donation program to ensure the timely opening of the Cadillac Mountain Road in Acadia National Park next year has been launched by local business owners.

The Sustainable Acadia Fund will collect money from donation boxes in area businesses and offer guests in participating local hotels a chance to contribute $1 to the park on top of their room rate. The fund is based on the National Park Guest Donation Program, which through similar mechanisms has raised $1.1 million for national parks since 2010.

The program stems from events last spring when, due to the federal budget sequester, Acadia officials opened the Park Loop Road, the Cadillac Mountain Road and the Hulls Cove Visitor Center a month later than usual.
